Fiji sugar mill completes investigation

2:05 pm on 13 August 2015

The Fiji Sugar Corporation has completed an internal investigation into how an employee suffered burns on the job.

A male worker was admitted to Lautoka Hospital last month after he suffered burns at the Rarawai sugar mill in Ba while he was reportedly cleaning a tank of boiling liquid.

The manager of the mill, Sailasa Waitala, says it is not known if the investigation's findings will be released and inquiries by the Ministry of Labour and the police are ongoing.

Meanwhile the Sugar and General Workers Union has criticised the mill's safety standards saying the injured man was not trained to do the job.

It also says other staff failed to carry out the proper checks such as monitoring the temperature of the liquid.

Another worker died at the mill earlier that month and the union says its safety concerns have fallen upon deaf ears.
