CNMI utilities operator still hampered by govt debt

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation in the Northern Marianas is owed over $US50 million in arrears by the CNMI government.

The agencies with the most utility debt are the Commonwealth Ports Authority at $US23 million, the Commonwealth Health Center at $US20.4 million and the central government which owes $US6.1 million.

CUC has had liquidity issues in the past that has prevented it from purchasing fuel in advance to run its power plants because of lack of credit from its main supplier, Mobil Oil Marianas.
