The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have given the Northern Marianas an additional $US8.2 million in funding for the current fiscal year.
Our correspondent said the local Medicaid program has used up all funding for the year and the new money will be a big boost to provide care for more than 15,000 individuals.
The money was recovered from unspent Medicaid grants to the Marianas from fiscal years 2012 through 2015 and from other previously awarded grant funds, also unspent.
Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides health coverage or nursing home coverage to certain categories of low-asset people, including children, pregnant women, parents of eligible children, people with disabilities and elderly needing nursing home care.
