1:30 Restoring dignity to unmarked graves

A genealogist and historian is on a mission to restore dignity to forgotten psychiatric patients buried in unmarked graves.

Anna Purgar has already spent two years providing names to unmarked graves at Tokanui Cemetery in the Waikato.

The graves belong to more than 450 psychiatric patients from Tokanui Hospital, which opened in 1912 and closed its doors in 1998.

Now there are calls to identify the graves of up to 1000 patients from Sunnyside psychiatric hospital buried at Sydenham Cemetery in Christchurch, and Anna has offered to help.
