1:15 A push to create a new public reserve

We head to beautiful Le Bons Bay, just north of Akaroa in Banks Peninsula, where a fundraising effort is underway to purchase a large piece of land which is on the market, to create a public reserve.

The Le Bons Bay Conservation Trust has a vision to buy the property, protect native flora and fauna, and allow walking access to the public.

Jesse talks to Matthew MacDonald from the trust to find out more. You can make a donation here.

Thousands of people are set to converge on the small Rangitikei township of Hunterville tomorrow for the annual Hunterville Huntaway Festival.

The main event of the day is the Shepherds' Shemozzle, which sees competitors complete an obstacle course with their trusty Huntaway dog by their side.

Gary Massicks is the man tasked with MC duties for the day.

1:35 Why and how loved ones linger

We were delighted to get a message this week from PhD student and avid Freaky Friday listener, Alicja Nowacka.

Alicja is based in the Cognitive Psychophysiology Lab at the University of Auckland.

Her research explores how people maintain emotional and cognitive bonds with those who've died, particularly through the sense of presence experienced during grief.

Alicja's studies look at how are feelings manifest in a multitude of ways - whether after seeing, hearing, or smelling something associated with the deceased.

If you'd like to contribute to Alicja's research, she is keen to hear from people who have had emotional experiences and felt presences, you can email her on: alicja.nowacka@auckland.ac.nz.

3:35 Critter of the Week: By-the-wind-sailor | katiaho rere

This Sunday, November 3rd, is World Jellyfish Day, a time to celebrate these mysterious and wonderful gelatinous sea creatures. The katiaho rere or by-the-wind-sailor (Velella velella) are unique and fascinating marine critters that live on the sea surface, drifting here and there with the wind and waves.

Katiaho rere are otherworldly looking: they have a disc-like electric blue body that sits on top of the water and a stiff, shimmery ’sail’ that catches the wind.
