Biodiversity is declining at unprecedented rates, and so the hunt for new strategies to combat the impacts rages on.
One idea that continues to gain traction is to grant legal rights to nature.
Ecuador became the first country to legalise the rights of nature in 2008, and an ever-growing collection of countries have followed. This includes patches of our own environment, such as the Whanganui River.
Dr Viktoria Kahui, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Economics at the University of Otago, joins guest-host Susana Lei'autaua today.
