Tarts: they’re sweet and Shakespearean but, as New Zealand comedian and writer, Deb Filler says “You want a taste?  Careful how you answer that question. This tart's not cheap.”

Actor and casting director Andrea Kelland is bringing A Tart on Tour to stage at Bats Theatre as part of this year’s Tahi Festival.

What started out for Kelland as five short stories became a full play. A memoir. A one-woman show with 35 characters; it explores the life of a young actor hustling to conquer the world but runs contrary to her search for a good time.

Running in parallel with Kelland’s own life; the young actor searches for excitement, drug-fueled parties and the show’s themes explore ambition, friendship, courage, addiction and whanau tension.

Kelland spoke to Culture 101’s Perlina Lau about leaving Shortland Street and bringing her life to stage.

The Tahi Festival annually celebrates solo theatre. This year there are 10 soloists from around Aotearoa.

A Tart on Tour is on at Bats Theatre from 6-16 September.
