In Kathryn Burnett’s new solo comedy play, Nicola Cheeseman is Back, Nicola is sick of trying to do it all. In an all too familiar situation for those in middle age: she has lost her mojo.

Shortlisted for the Adam New Zealand Play Award 2023, the plot is neatly described as ”a ride through the suburban to-do list of a 50-year-old woman as she navigates her husband moving out and her ageing father moving in, all the while wondering exactly when she shelved her dreams of being a nouveau punk goddess in order to please everyone else.”

With the guitar, kids and job is the play’s solo star, acclaimed actor Jodie Rimmer. Recently turned 50, with two boys heading into teenagehood, Jodie relates.

Currently appearing in TVs Friends like Her on Three Now, Jodie Rimmer has been acting professionally since age 12. Winner of a Best Supporting Actress Award for feature In My Father’s Den at the 2005 New Zealand Film and Television Awards, recent screen roles include in Netflix’s Sweet Tooth and feature Nude Tuesday.

Jodie Rimmer joins Culture 101 to play ‘Fast Favourites’. She gives shout-outs to locals acting coach and script consultant Brita McVeigh, artist and RNZ presenter Susana Lei'ataua, filmmaker Abigail Greenwood and writer and menopause expert Niki Bazzant.

Jodie also says American actor and director Pamela Adlon is her idol. Adlon played a single mum and working actor caring for her mother in five seasons of the hit series Better Things. We see a pattern emerging!

Nicola Cheeseman is Back is playing at the Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre from June 19 to July 7.
