For more than two decades, award-winning journalist and presenter, Amanda Gillies has been gracing the screens in the living rooms of Kiwi homes.
Proudly from Gisborne, she started her career as a reporter for the Gisborne Herald before joining TV3 in 2001. During her 23 years at the station, she worked across the country for 3News, Campbell Live and in 2008, became the Australia Correspondent. Her role as a senior journalist took her all over the world. In 2017, she became a host alongside Duncan Garner and Mark Richardson of the AM Show, until 2021. She had initially planned on staying at TV3 for only 3 years.
Joining Culture 101 for Fast Favourites, Gillies admits choosing lighter forms of entertainment to offset what has been a challenging year. Her recommendations include Netflix series Territory which has been likened to an Australian version of Yellowstone; a billion-dollar cattle ranch in the outback which has been left without an heir. Her stable of podcasts include Raw Politics, The News Agents, and RNZ’s The Detail (of course).
As for music, it’s jazz and blues all the way with ‘Sway’ by Dean Martin as her song choice. Dean Martin’s music was played throughout Gillies’ wedding to Newsroom co-Editor, Tim Murphy, in January 2023.
