Wrongfully conficted Alan Hall files compensation claim
A man labelled a murderer for 36 years who wrongfully spent 19 years behind bars has filed a claim for compensation, which if accepted could see the largest such payout in New Zealand history. Alan Hall was convicted of murdering Arthur Easton in his Papakura family home in 1985 when Alan was just 23 years old. But the conviction was quashed in June this year after even the Crown conceded that Mr Hall's trial was profoundly unfair and constituted a miscarriage of justice. The spotlight has now turned onto the police and lawyers who helped put him behind bars, with the police, Independent Police Conduct Authority and Solicitor-General also investigating the case. Nick Truebridge spoke with Alan's brother Geoff Hall, who along with their late mother fought tirelessly to clear his name.
