Landmark court decision finds Uber drivers are employees not contractors

In a landmark decision that challenges the so-called "gig economy", a court has ruled that four Wellington Uber drivers are employees of the ride-share giant. Yesterday, a chief Employment Court Judge determined that the drivers are not independent contractors but in an employment relationship and said the decision may have a broader impact. Uber says it's going to appeal the decision, but the unions behind the case say it puts gig economy companies on notice that they can no longer operate in this way.
