Biosecurity incursions have the potential to devastate the country's primary industries, whose products make up 70 percent of exports.
The recent PSA-V disease which is rampant in kiwifruit could cost the industry a billion dollars or more and it is a classic example of just what can go wrong if pests or diseases get in.
Andrew McRae talks to those charged with biosecurity protection and the farmers and orchardists who rely on it for their livelihood.
