NASA's senior project scientist for Hubble - Jennifer Wiseman

From Matariki, 9:35 am on 28 June 2024

NASA's Hubble space telescope has provided probably the best images of the Matariki star cluster. Hubble has been in continuous orbit around the earth for 34 years and it measured the cluster at about 440 light years away from us. The telescope has made more than a million observations which have expanded our understanding of the universe, including which planets might be habitable for humans in the distant future. To give you an idea of the telescope's range - it could detect the width of a small coin from 138 kilometres away. Dr Jennifer Wiseman is NASA's senior project scientist for Hubble, and our producer Tama Muru talks to her about the telescope's awesome capabilities.
