The Kaikoura earthquake has given a kayaker a chance to do something no one's ever done before.

A brand new rapid has appeared in the Clarence River, north of the township, caused by a massive uplift of limestone slab.

It's right in front of raft guide Toby Johnstone's cottage, which has been lifted by 10 metres and is now red stickered.

Naturally he's been the first in the world to ride the new rapid in a kayak.
