Three-quarters of the children who were harmed in state care over the three months to March were Māori.
The Safety of Children in Care quarterly report from Oranga Tamariki shows just over 100 children suffered neglect, or emotional, physical or sexual harm.
Oranga Tamariki deputy chief executive Hoani Lambert told RNZ social issues reporter Sarah Robson Māori tamariki are over-represented in the figures.
The ministry says it's too early to determine any significant trends in the figures from the first three quarters, and there haven't been any major changes to the number of children experiencing harm.
