New leadership 'overdue' for Ngapuhi
Some people in the Far North say whoever replaces Sonny Tau as the chair of Te Runanga a iwi o Ngapuhi needs to bring a new style of leadership. Mr Tau became chair in 2009 and was re-elected in August, but some say his surprise resignation last week was long overdue. Ngapuhi has spent ten years trying to reach a treaty settlement with the Crown, but remains divided on who should represent the iwi in negotiations, and what the settlement redress should look like for its 110 hapu. Ngati Hine chair, Pita Tipene, told RNZ Te Manu Korihi reporter Te Aniwa Hurihanganui it's going to take a different kind of leader to unite the people of Ngapuhi.
