Dunedin councillor loses legal battle over parking ticket

From Morning Report, 7:44 am on 3 June 2022

A Dunedin councillor who took legal action against his own council over a spat which started with a $12 parking ticket has lost his case in court.

An altercation between councillor Lee Vandervis and a council staffer in 2019 resulted in a code of conduct complaint against him for "aggressive" behaviour.

Things then turned complicated - there was a judicial review, claims of a smear campaign leading up to the mayoral election, and even appearances at the Court of Appeal.

But yesterday, the Court of Appeal threw out Vandervis' second legal appeal and ordered him to pay for costs.

He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
