US senators agree on gun legislation proposal

From Morning Report, 6:14 am on 13 June 2022

A bipartisan group of US senators have agreed on a proposal for very limited gun safety legislation.

They've announced a gun safety framework including support for state "red flag" laws, tougher background checks for firearms buyers under 21 and a crackdown on a practice called "straw purchases".

It comes after tens-of-thousands of demonstrators descended on Washington and hundreds of other rallies across the United States demanding lawmakers undertake urgent reforms to end the country's gun violence.
