New law on tech firms paying for news proposed in US

A new law that would give news organisations more power to negotiate fees for content shared on facebook has been proposed in America. In a throwback to Facebook's stoush with Australia over similar laws in 2021, Meta has threatened to spokesperson Andy Stone said the company would remove US news content from the platform if the legislation goes ahead. In Australia the tactic led to significant backlash and was ultimately unsuccesful. Both Facebook and Google made agreements with Australian news outlets to pay for content. Broadcasting minister Willie Jackson said in a statement on Sunday said the New Zealand government was considering introducing similar legislation, modelled on the Australian and Canadian models. Technology writer and correspondent Rory Cellan spoke to Mani Dunlop.
