Rotorua teen headed to Harvard Medical School

From Morning Report, 7:55 am on 20 December 2022

A young Māori man from Rotorua will be jetting to Boston next year after earning a rare admission to the Harvard Medical School.

Koan Hemana, who was the deputy head boy at Rotorua Boys this year, is just the second Māori to earn admission to the prestigious medical school.

He says he want to become a doctor to help his people, highlighting the flawed health care system in New Zealand and poor outcomes for Māori.

Not to mention a lack of Māori medical practitioners across the motu.

Hemana spoke to Charlotte Cook.
