Can cookbooks really be plagiarised?

From Nights, 8:30 pm on 30 April 2025

Two Australian cookbook authors are in a dispute over claimed plagiarism of recipes for caramel slice and baklava.

Nagi Maehashi, behind the popular food blog Recipe Tin Eats, says it appears influencer Brooke Bellamy's new cookbook Bake with Brooki contains uncannily similar ingredients, quantities, and instructions.

But how different can two recipes for the same meal be? Can anyone claim to be the inventor or owner of a recipe? Isn't food a universal language?

Cookbook editor and former cooking teacher Kathy Peterson joins Emile Donovan to weigh in.
