The Foo Fighters were the unlikely band formed after the demise of Nirvana… unlikely in that the band was formed by drummer Dave Grohl who moved to lead vocals and guitar and that the music seemed to embrace mainstream rock, where Nirvana's was a distinct reaction against it. The Foo Fighters' 1996 debut album was pretty much a Dave Grohl solo project but the act eventually coalesced into a working band, but with Grohl firmly in charge. They became one of the biggest bands of the past 20 years thanks to albums like 1998's The Colour And The Shape and 2005's In Your Honor. The Foo fighters most recent project is Sonic Highways, an album borne out of Grohl's eight-part TV documentary in which he and the band visit eight American cities, research their musical histories and record in one of their iconic studios. The Foo Fighters are due to perform at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium this Saturday night.
