The medicinal cannabis industry says changes to drug laws that have finally taken effect will be a game changer.

The changes to the Misuse of Drugs (Medicinal Cannabis) Regulations will make it easier for New Zealand growers and manufacturers to export.

Originally penciled to come into effect at the end of last year, Cabinet finally approved amendments to the regulations last week, with immediate effect.

The new regulations mean that growers now only have to meet the standards of importing nations, rather than New Zealand's quality standards.

This means products with cannabis-based ingredients (CBIs), which are unavailable for sale in New Zealand, can be exported - and growers able to compete globally.
