9:06 Mediawatch
Mediawatch looks at a proposal to save public service television on the cheap – by putting Radio New Zealand National on the small screen. Could it actually work? Would people watch it? And what’s in it for the man behind the plan, TV and movie producer John Barnett? Mediawatch also looks at coverage of this week’s extreme weather; and how Telecom swiftly canned its unpopular campaign to abstain for the All Blacks.
Produced and presented by Colin Peacock and Jeremy Rose.
9:40 James T Kloppenberg – Shaping Obama
James Kloppenberg discusses the influences and philosophies that have shaped Barack Obama’s world view and steer his presidential style.
James T. Kloppenberg is the chair of the History Department at Harvard University. His book, Reading Obama, is published by Princeton University Press.
10:06 Fred Allen – Untold Story
Sir Fred Allen is the oldest living All Black – a former captain who coached the team unbeaten through 37 matches from 1966 to 1968, when Chris Laidlaw was playing for his country. Now 91, Fred has produced his memoirs – written by long-time friends Alan Sayers (95) and Les Watkins (81). There’s a lot of history in this story – but Fred is also looking forward and reckons if the AB’s don’t win the Rugby World Cup this year, they never will.
Sir Fred’s biography, Fred the Needle, by Alan Sayers and Les Watkins, is published by Hachette.
10:45 Hidden Treasures
This week on Hidden treasures our host Trevor Reekie features the legendary Quincy Jones reminiscing about meeting the late Amy Winehouse; plus two Croatian virtuosos belting out a Michael Jackson cover on two cellos.
Produced by Trevor Reekie
