With a career spanning decades, Baaba Maal has built a reputation for fusing traditional and modern Senegalese music styles and singing in Pulaar, French, English, and other African languages.
Raised by musical parents in Senegal he cut his teeth studying music at a tertiary level and playing in the band Daande Lenol, which earned a reputation for its unique combination of reggae, vintage R & B and traditional music.
This experience that led him to collaborate with renowned musicians like Brian Eno and Peter Gabriel. More recently Maal was appointed as a goodwill ambassador by the UN, a platform he has used to advocate for women's rights.
Here he is performing live at WOMAD closing the festival on Sunday evening.
This concert was recorded by RNZ sound engineer Darryl Stack and mixed by William Saunders for RNZ Music.
