DakhaBrakha are a folk quartet from Kyiv who have been performing together for over two decades. Their name, derived from the old Ukrainian language, translates to "give take." The group’s distinctive sound weaves together multiple traditional folk music styles, paying homage to Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage.
But it’s not just their music that captivates – the group are unflinchingly political, using the stage to elevate their messages of autonomy.
DakhaBrakha took the WOMAD 2024 stage performing in regal, tassled, robe-like attire, complemented by their large and striking black hats made from lambswool, towering high above their heads. These lofty hats added an impressive visual element to their set, which was performed before a captivated crowd on the Bowlstage in Ngamotu, New Plymouth.
This concert was recorded live by RNZ Audio engineers Darryl Stack and mixed by Will Saunders for RNZ Music.
