The heavy rain and easterly gales that battered Northland overnight have now shifted to Coromandel peninsula - with Tai Rāwhiti next in the firing line.

The Coromandel Peninsula has an orange rain warning in place until 1am and the same warning for Gisborne/Tai Rāwhiti lasts until 8am Wednesday.

MetService duty forecaster Health Gullery says the risk of severe downpours in Coromandel is gone, but it could still experience thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain.

While rain has eased in Northland, Civil Defence says it's important people remember there may still be hazards like surface flooding and fallen trees or debris.
