It was a humdinger in Hawke's Bay as the Hurricanes held off a dramatic late onslaught from the Fijian Drua to claim a famous 38-34 win.
With one last shot at stealing victory, the Drua strung together several phases as they desperately fought for a way through.
But the Hurricane's held firm, Harry Godfrey's 75th minute try ultimately proving the difference.
The Drua will rue a blunder at kick off reception after reclaiming the lead, only to hand it straight back as Godfrey waltzed over for the clincher.
The rugby wasn't exactly textbook, with dozens of schoolboy errors committed by both sides, but the rocks gave way to diamonds with some scintillating tries scored in the Napier sunshine.
Things appeared set for a cricket score when skipper Du Plessis Kirifi went over inside 38 seconds after Cam Roigard cut the Drua defence wide open from the base of a ruck.
The visitors responded just five minutes later and a tit for tat ensued which saw a halftime score of 22-19 in favour of the Drua.
The Hurricanes were at one stage down to 13, with skipper Du Plessis Kirifi and lock Will Tucker both sent to the bin in the first half.
Just after oranges, the try of the match came in deliciously Drua style, as with their trademark Fijian flair, they went 80 metres upfield, producing some mesmeric offloads to send big lock Isoa Nasilasila steaming over the line.
The hosts stayed in touch with tries to Roigard and Bailyn Sulivan, before Elia Canakaivata finished off a slick lineout move to put the Drua back in front.
However, as they had done throughout the 80 minutes, a mistake would cost them possession and eventually the match when Godfrey sealed the deal.
