A large group of Christchurch employers has been in Wellington recruiting workers to rebuild earthquake-damaged parts of their city.
The employers, including construction companies Fletchers and Fulton Hogan, interviewed prospective workers at the Wellington Institute of Technology in Petone on Thursday.
The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild team said 900 workers are needed by January and a further 10,000 once the rebuild begins in earnest.
The employers are offering a six-week training course to give the workers the skills they will need and say there is an opportunity for lifetime employment.
The jobs on offer range from operating stop-go signs to driving heavy machinery.
A Radio New Zealand reporter said dozens of trade school graduates and students signed up up to join the rebuild. Most have already started or graduated from a trades course.
