Christchurch residents wanting to install a log burner in their new homes will have to wait at least a year because the model which is permitted isn't on the market.
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee announced the restrictions on log burners on Wednesday after acting on an application made by the Canterbury regional council to amended the Clean Air Zones.
The restrictions mean people building new homes can only install the ultra-low emission log burner, which is still in the development stages.
Mr Brownlee said he hopes demand for the ultra-low emission fire will speed up its development and production.
The minister doesn't think the announcement will slow down the city's rebuild following recent damaging earthquakes, because people can leave a space in their home for the wood burner to be fitted.
Mr Brownlee said smog has been a long-standing issue for Christchurch and the city should continue to drive air quality improvements forward, despite the setback from the quakes.
Regional council commissioner David Bedford expects the log burners to be available by winter 2014.
