In a change to the procedure for announcing Covid-19 cases, Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the new protocol was to tweet the numbers ahead of any press conferences.
Yesterday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced there had been 17 deaths overnight, which was the highest number of people to die in a single day in Australia since the pandemic began.
Meanwhile Queensland has reported one new Covid-19 infection.
The latest case is a returned traveller who is in quarantine.
Health Minister Steven Miles said the state had avoided the risks of a widespread outbreak from returning cases from Melbourne.
