Architect Ian Athfield says those responsible for rebuilding Christchurch will need to work together more to make the city a success.

Mr Athfield told Radio New Zealand's Arts on Sunday programme that there is good work going on in separate areas of the city, and on different components of the rebuild, but no real cohesion.

He said there had been too much focus on the city's edges in development over the last 40 years and the rebuild is a chance to change things.

To achieve this, architects, landscapers, artists and traffic engineers all need to work together, he says, but that's not yet happening and will take time.

Mr Athfield was honoured at the Arts Foundation Icon awards this month, a distinction limited to 20 of New Zealand's most accomplished living artists.

He was appointed the architectural ambassador for Christchurch by the New Zealand Institute of Architects after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Canterbury on 4 September 2010.
