Seven fire crews have been battling a house fire in the town of Stillwater, east of Greymouth.
A Fire Service spokesperson said the house had partially collapsed but the blaze had been brought under control.
Three crews were still attending the fire, which started just before 5.30am, with fire engines arriving about a quarter-hour later.
The fire was not fireworks-related, and was not being treated as suspicious at this stage, the spokesperson said.
However, an investigator was on the way there.
