Police yet to name man shot by officers in New Plymouth

Police say they cannot yet release the name of the man who was shot dead by officers in New Plymouth last night.

Unexplained death in Taita, Lower Hutt early on Sunday 26th January 2020.  A Police cordon and crime scene invetsigation tent were in place Monday 27th January 2020.

Few details have been released but police said the man's family has been informed and is being offered support.

Police confirmed the shooting in a statement late last night.

They said it occurred while they were carrying out a vehicle stop on Devon Road about 9.30pm.

Medical assistance was immediately provided, but the person died at the scene, the statement added.

A critical incident investigation has been started, the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified, and the officers involved are being supported.

A section of highway between Mountain Road and De Havilland Drive remains closed while the scene is examined and a detour is in place.
