Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a man in the Bay of Plenty.

A 48-year-old man had been taken to Whakatane Hospital after being seriously assaulted shortly before 11.30am yesterday.
The victim received medical care and was airlifted to Waikato Hospital, where police said this evening he had succumbed to his injuries.
Police are seeking assistance from the public as they probe the incident.
