At least three people have been injured after a boat rolled on Canterbury this afternoon.

Maritime New Zealand said it received distress alerts from two separate beacons just after 2pm on Sunday, after a jet boat incident on the Rangitata River.

It said a group of seven jet boats had been in the area, and only one had been involved in the incident.

Three people were hurt with injuries including a head injury, suspected spinal injury and a broken leg.

They were transported to Christchurch Hospital by helicopters.
