Police in Hastings have launched a homicide investigation after the death of a man who was critically injured in the early hours of Wednesday.
The 24-year-old man suffered a serious head injury in an alleged assault, which occurred in the vicinity of Jellicoe Street and Hood Street at around 3am.
He was flown to Wellington Hospital where he underwent surgery later that day.
He later died, police said in a statement.
Officers want to hear from anyone who witnessed the alleged assault. They also want to speak to anyone who was in the Jellicoe Street/ Hood Street area at the time and might have information that could help with their inquiries.
Police are also appealing to Jellicoe Street residents who might have relevant CCTV footage to get in touch with them.
