Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man died at a house in Waikanae Beach this evening.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pete Middlemiss said about 4.20pm emergency services were alerted that the man had been seriously injured after "an altercation".

"The man received medical attention at the scene, but sadly died," Middlemiss said.

Stuff is reporting the man was stabbed.

Another man who was at the house, and knew the victim, was speaking to officers and assisting with their enquiries.

A police cordon has been lifted but officers will remain at the property overnight.

Earlier, a resident told RNZ Napier Grove had been cordoned off between Hicks Crescent and Queens Road.

A scene examination will be conducted over the next few days.

Police did not believe there was any ongoing risk to the public, however, they would be carrying out more inquiries into the circumstances of the death.

Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed it also attended the incident.

National's Ōtaki MP Tim Costley said in a social media post he was saddened to hear of "the tragic loss of life".

"My thoughts are with family and friends, and all those who serve our community and were involved this afternoon in trying to save him."

Waikanae Beach is around 60km north of the Wellington CBD.
