Two people have died after crashes in rural Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

The Waikato crash occurred about 12.45pm Saturday on Onagoroto Road/State Highway 30, about 2km west of Tram Road in Kinleith.

Police said a person was critically injured in the crash. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and they died at the scene.

A second person was taken to hospital in a moderate condition.

The road was closed while emergency services attended, but had now reopened, police said.

Meanwhile, another person died at the scene of a crash on State Highway 2 in Waiotahe, Opotiki.

The crash, about 2pm, involved three vehicles, police said.

"One person was transported to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries, another person was transported to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries and a further two people were transported to Whakatane Hospital with moderate injuries."

That road had also reopened.

The serious crash unit was investigating both crashes, police said.
