A ban on outdoor fires in Wairarapa is being revoked after a couple of weeks of wet and cooler weather.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) put all of the Wairarapa in a prohibited fire season last month.

Wellington District Community Risk Manager Phil Soal said the recent rainfall and cooler conditions over the last couple of weeks had reduced the risk of wildfire in the area.

From 8am tomorrow morning the southern coastal area, including Aorangi Forest Park and the eastern coast up to Pahaoa would shift to a restricted fire season, meaning open fires could be lit with a permit from FENZ.

All other areas in Wairarapa, including the valley and up the coast to Mataikona, would shift to an open fire season and not require a FENZ permit for outdoor fires.

"We really appreciate the cooperation we've had from people in Wairarapa while fires were banned," Soal said.

"We weren't called out to any major vegetation fires over the holiday break, and we're very pleased about that."

When lighting fires people still needed to take sensible precautions, and avoid burning if strong winds were forecast, Soal said.

"Make sure you have sufficient water or extinguishers to put the fire out properly, and keep checking that it's out afterwards."

People can check which fire season they are in on the Fire and Emergency website.
