An Otago community's drinking water will be upgraded years earlier than expected to ensure it remains safe and becomes compliant.

Luggate was due for upgrades in 2028, but the Queenstown Lakes District Council said it made sense to fast track that work as it planned to introduce a new protozoa barrier this year.

Council property and infrastructure acting general manager, Simon Mason, said the upgrades would provide two new supply bores, access to a new water source, and a new ultraviolet treatment plant by the end of the year.

"The new treatment plant will ensure drinking water in Luggate remains safe and achieves compliance, and the new bores mean we can provide enough water to meet the needs of this growing community.

"The project also includes development of a new long-term reservoir site which will eventually include significantly increased storage capacity as part of future investment in the area."

It was expected to cost about $6.3 million with the tender due to go out to market early this year.
