Residents of Ranfurly in Central Otago are being asked to reduce their water use due to a shortage of safely-treated water.
The Central Otago District Council said recent heavy rainfall had caused dirty river conditions, which had limited its ability to treat water to safe levels.
It had been operating off stored water since late yesterday, and the reservoir level was dropping, it said.
The council was now asking people in Ranfurly to reduce their water usage as much as possible, by having short showers and not using water outdoors.
