A rāhui has been placed on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the central North Island after a person died Saturday on the mountain hiking track.
Around 12pm, a man in his 50s collapsed while traversing the Tongariro Crossing - efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful, and he passed away a short time later.
Under the guidance and tikanga of Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro, a karakia has taken place alongside the man's family member and everyone who assisted.
The Department of Conservation said the rāhui, which is a sign of respect to the person's whānau, will last for three days and be lifted at 6am on Wednesday.
Hikers in the area are being asked to use alternative tracks during the rāhui.
Members of the public are asked to consider alternative walking routes during this time.
The man's death will be referred to the Coroner.
