Northland Civil Defence is urging residents to prepare for possible high winds and power outages as weather linked to ex-tropical cyclone Tam nears.
Heavy rain and strong winds are due to hit to the upper North Island from Wednesday, with damp skies expected for much of the country over the rest of the week.
MetService Meteorologist Silvia Martino said Cyclone Tam's centre may not reach New Zealand but the country will feel its impact for days.
The first rain was expected in the early hours of Wednesday, and heavy downpours should continue until Thursday night. The worst of the weather was forecast on Thursday.
