The manufacturer of Nurofen says consumers should not be concerned about their safety when correctly taking non-prescription products containing ibuprofen.
A Danish study looked at the widely-used anti-inflammatory drugs diclofenac and ibuprofen and the associated stroke risk amongst healthy individuals using the drugs.
Reckitt Benckiser makes Nurofen, a painkiller which contains ibuprofen. It says the results of the study are based on high doses, and should not be confused with every day, over-the-counter usage.
The Ministry of Health says the increased risk of cardiovascular complications, among other risks, was already known.
MedSafe advises using the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.
