Former Christian Heritage Party leader Graham Capill is now out of prison.
A spokesperson for the Parole Board says he was released earlier this week.
Capill was jailed for nine years in 2005 after admitting abusing three young girls.
He has completed the Kia Marama treatment Programme for child sex offenders.
Special parole conditions have been imposed on him, including restrictions on communicating with his victims and anyone under 16 years of age.
The Parole Board says Capill has been assessed as posing a low to medium long term risk of sexual reoffending.
The board says he has strong support in the community from people who are aware of possible pitfalls which could lead to reoffending.
