Legislation overhauling the passenger-service industry, bringing taxi and ride-sharing companies such as Uber into line, has passed its first reading in Parliament.
The bill simplifies the regulatory system by creating a single class of small passenger-service operators.
Associate Minister of Transport Craig Foss told the House today operators would be able to compete on an even footing and the industry would be safer for the public.
He said there were fewer regulations in the bill for taxis, which would no longer have to belong to an approved organisation.
