It has been a week since up to 40 children's graves were vandalised.

The police were still trying to find a man seen on CCTV footage attacking the graves.

The council's manager of Auckland Cemeteries Catherine Moore said most of the area had been restored.

"We had done the white crosses, a number of those were damaged, so they were restored, the headstones are back in place, other than one or two that were quite badly damaged."

Ms Moore said today's ceremony was an opportunity to give the affected families some closure after the attack.
