Wellington's social housing tenants will be unable to smoke in communal areas from today.
The Wellington City Council told tenants in March it was banning smoking in shared areas such as hallways, laundry rooms, and car parks in all its housing complexes.
Coming into effect today to coincide with World Smokefree Day, the ban is part of the council's move to make all its social housing smokefree by 2025.
A councillor, Paul Eagle, said it had received many complaints from tenants about smoking and the benefits of being smokefree were clear.
The Napier City and Hastings district councils are also considering whether to make public places, such as bus shelters and entrances to public places, smokefree.
