The Government is to spend up to $14 million redeveloping Northland College in Kaikohe.
The college has a roll of 310 students and is currently being run by a commissioner.
Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye said a commissioner was put in place at the college because it had a history of poor student achievement and financial management.
Ms Kaye said that included poor maintenance of buildings which led to them getting into a very bad state.
She said a small number of existing buildings would be retained but most of the school will be rebuilt.
Ms Kaye said the redevelopment will include new classrooms, a multi-purpose gym and hall as well as a new library and technology areas.
Work will start early next year.
